On Friday the 11th June we had a visitor Stephen Gaffney,who is a bee keeper and he came in to tell all of us at Magherabeg N.S. about bees. Now we will tell you about how bees are born. Bees start as an egg and grow to larva, paya and adult.
Bee facts :
5 types of bees are worker bees, drone bees, 1 queen, nurse and scouts. 50 to 60,000 bees can live in one hive. There are honey bees that guard the hive. The queen’s lifespan is 2 to 6 years. Bees will vomit into each other’s mouths to pass the nectar. The queen bee lays up to 1,000 – 3,000 eggs a day. Bees communicate through dance. Bees can travel up to 2 to 5 miles.
Trees have more food than plants for bees. Bees flap their wings on hornets and wasps heating up their temperature until it dies. Beekeepers use smoke to calm down bees. Bees normally make 2-3 times more honey than they need. The Queen and the baby bees stay at the bottom of the hive.
Honey is very good for you. Scout bees look for a new home for bees if they need one. Bees can turn any honey bee into a queen bee by giving it royal jelly. Bees have 5 eyes. When bees travel to a new hive the queen bee is normally in the middle of the swarm. 60,000 bees make up to 25 – 50 jars of honey.
