As part of our Green School’s work on Biodiversity, 5th and 6th Class have been working on the Incredible Edibles programme. Incredible Edibles is a healthy eating and growing programme. This is a hands-on SESE programme where we’ve used skills in geography, science and maths while also learning about making good food choices.
We set to work growing strawberries, potatoes, lettuce, spinach, chives, carrots and turnips – some with more success than others!
We learned about where food comes from, processed and unprocessed foods and identifying Irish produce. We planted seeds and documented their progress. Mr Meehan arranged for raised beds to be built in our newly developing school garden. We watched videos on recipes using fruit and vegetables for ideas on what we could make at home.
We also learned about the food pyramid and the different classes of food and how they affect our bodies. To encourage healthy habits at home and at school we took on the “7-a-Day” challenge where we recorded the potatoes, fruit and vegetables ate at school and at home over a week.
We’ve really enjoyed this work and look forward to improving our knowledge and skills even further.
