We are currently working to achieve our 5th green flag. The theme we are working on is Biodiversity. We have done lots of work so far. Here are some of the things in our action plan:
- Renewed the Green Schools Committee.
- Reminded all classes about using bins properly and taking home their litter.
- Continuing battery recycling as part of the WEEE pledge.
- Yard clean-up to maintain Litter and Waste work.
- “Energy Squad” ensure “switch it off” campaign is being fully implemented- Classes to be checked daily
- “Water Squad” ensure that “Turn it off” (water) campaign is fully implemented
- Reminding parents about “No Idling” campaign outside the school
- Informing parents about our work using the school website.
- Displaying our findings and Green School work on notice board.
- Carried out a Biodiversity survey to find out levels of awareness in the school.
- Completed a habitat map of the school grounds
- Took part in Heritage Keepers programme [Burren Beo Trust]
- Took part in Agri Aware “Farming Through the seasons” webinars.
- Lessons are taught across the curriculum on the theme of biodiversity.
- Heritage Keepers in-person visit.
- Created posters to increase awareness of Biodiversity theme.
- Took part in Ireland Fisheries “Something Fishy” programme.
- Took part in Agri Aware “Incredible Edibles” programme.
- Something Fishy in-person visit.
- Flower/vegetable beds added to school garden.
- Leave area of school garden “unmanaged” (school hedgerow).
- Heritage Keepers local field trip.
- Efficient Renewables Energy talk on school’s new solar panels.
- Hedgerow workshop with Heritage in Schools visitor.
- Bees & Biodiversity Workshop.
- Planted in school garden at School Summer Programme.
Stuff we want to add:
- Add bird boxes and bug hotels to school garden
- Contact Local Authority for an assessment visit for Green Flag renewal.
- Hold a competition to come up with our school’s Biodiversity Green Code.
- Hold a colouring competition to continue to raise awareness.
- Celebrate National Tree Week.
- Fill in and submit the application form for our next Green Flag.
- Hold an Action Day in school (as part of National Biodiversity week)
