Third class went to Drumoghill NS and did a course in cycling safety. Fergus and Gemma McDaid were our teachers. They were kind, caring and helpful. We learned how to cycle safely.
First, we learned to check weather conditions and make sure we are wearing the right clothes. Baggy trousers are not a good idea. We made sure our laces were tied. It was important that we wear a high viz jacket, helmet and gloves. We zipped up our jackets and cycling glasses are helpful if you have them.
The next important thing we did was get our bikes ready. We did the ‘M check’. We started at the back. We checked our back wheel, the chain, seat, handlebars, brakes and front wheel. Remember to take your multi-tool kit and your first aid kit.
We learned to check the traffic behind and use our hands as indicator signs. We learned to cross the road safely. We used our ‘life saver check’. We had to be very careful going around corners and checking for blind spots. It’s important to remmeber safety when cycling.
We also had great fun free wheeling down the big hill. We learned so much, completed our cycle safety course, got our certificates and had great fun.
