In celebration of World Down Syndrome Day, 6th Class took part in a special learning day to raise awareness and celebrate people with Down Syndrome. We spent time learning about what Down Syndrome is, and how people with Down Syndrome are just like everyone else, with unique abilities and talents. Down Syndrome happens when someone is born with an extra chromosome, the 21st one, which is why World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on the 21st of March.
We challenged old stereotypes and discussed how we can be an inclusive school, where everyone is treated with kindness and respect. To mark the day, we designed colourful posters to share what we learned and even ran 21 laps around the playground, to celebrate the extra chromosome that makes people with Down Syndrome so special. We also wore colourful socks to celebrate and raise awareness. If you look under a microscope, chromosomes look a little bit like a pair of socks!
We had a day of learning, fun and showing support for our friends and loved ones who have Down Syndrome!
