The boys and girls recently enjoyed an action packed and fun-filled ‘Active Week’! On Monday, Joe Kealy, a native of Kilkenny, brought hurleys, sliotars and helmets and taught the children some hurling skills. The helmets offered some protection from the April showers and great fun was had by all!
On Tuesday we showed off our basketball skills with mini-games of basketball, benchball and hotseat.
On Wednesday, a large number of our students participated in the Letterkenny Athletics Club Primary Schools Sports Day at the Aura Leisure Centre. We had a very enjoyable day in beautiful sunshine with children participating in sprints, long distance, long jump and shot. Those who didn’t travel to the Aura completed the ‘Walkway Activities’ and hopped, skipped and jumped their way around the school grounds. They also showed off their Irish dancing skills in ‘An Damhsa Mór’.
On Thursday, past pupil Erin Friel, spoke to the children about her athletics career to date. Erin recently won a gold medal at the National Juvenile Indoor Championships in Athlone and spoke to the children about her training regime and the sacrifices she makes in order to be the best in her field. Erin encouraged the children to believe in themselves and showed that with commitment and self-belief anything is possible. Erin then joined the children in the yard for an active break.
On Thursday afternoon the children enjoyed a mini sports day with egg and spoon, sack and three-legged races. Some groups also played dodgeball.
On Friday we took the bus to Lagan pitch where Damien McFadden encouraged us to show off o ur soccer skills. There were some very spirited games with some great passing and defending on display.
A big thank you to Erin, Joe and Damien for joining us for our Active Week. Thank you also to the teachers for their participation and to the boys and girls in Mrs McChrystal and Ms McLoughlin’s classes for organising the equipment each day. We hope the children had an enjoyable week and maybe even learned some new skills!
